Premiere: Casey Dubie, "Wine"

Today Houston-based musician Casey Dubie releases her new single, "Wine," before heading into the studio to record her debut album. ​Dubie's friend and producer Christopher Hawthorne plays piano on this track, combining with her guitar and vocals for a rich, full-bodied sound. 

Next week Dubie will be in Nashville, joined in the studio by Micah Tawlks (MYZICA, Jake McMullen). She's "excited to further develop a sound that Micah and I have discovered together," and will share it with us by the end of the year.

​But for now--and just in time for Valentine's--pop open a bottle of cabernet sauvignon (Dubie's choice) and drink in some delicious "Wine." 

Dubie has a way of seducing me sonically within seconds. She combines rhythmic acoustic guitar with vocals that go down as easy as sweet white wine for a beautiful blend that gives me a bit of a buzz. And here in four minutes, Dubie constructs a romantic lyrical allegory with vivid visuals and plenty of emotion. 

​She's been mulling on the concept of this tune for a while now. 

"The song is a critique of myself and how I feel I've navigated relationships in the past," Dubie says. "I kept many at arm's length and did not take the risk (that all relationships require) to experience or develop them. Instead, I avoided opportunities for relationships out of fear and perfectionism." 

"I hope that this song will add to the narrative that love and relationships are complex and we can't assume we understand what is happening in someone else's life if we haven't taken the time to ask or understand," she says. 

As the tune trails off, Dubie leaves us with the lingering, optimistic thought: “Like a fine wine ages with time, maybe you do, too." Is she talking about a potential love interest? Or perhaps, herself? 

Because I can't help but think of Dubie's own music in the same way: only improving with time.
